Absaroka TIM Dispatches from the field 11/10 Legend Rock

By Dave Showalter

These images at the Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site site near Hamilton Dome date to 12,000 years ago.  Humans have populated and used this landscape since the end of the Pleistocene epoch, living with both land and wildlife. They left behind images for our interpretation and added layers of pecked drawings from visitors over time. Shoshone, Crowe, Arapaho, and Cheyenne Indians used this spiritual place throughout millennia and still consider it an important place today. John Fish and Michael Bies of the Worland BLM office helped me to read the panels – this image has bison, deer, elk, and “little people” to connect to the spirit world. The Absaroka Front is rife with important archeological sites.
